The UK veterinary market has consolidated hard — by recent industry analyses, around six in ten practices now sit inside corporate groups such as CVS, IVC Evidensia, Linnaeus, Medivet, Vets4Pets, and VetPartners. Group practices usually have their software chosen for them. This guide is for everyone else: the independents and small groups who pick their own system, watch their costs, and want to own their data. Seven systems, ranked, with honest cons for every one — ours included.

Methodology
How we ranked the field
Every system was judged through the same five lenses, weighted for what a UK practice buying its own software actually faces:
Total cost per seat — the real monthly bill once every receptionist, nurse, and locum has a login, not the headline price.
Pricing transparency — is the price list on the website, or behind a demo and a quote?
Data residency and ownership — where the data sits, under which privacy regime, and how easily you get it all back out.
UK fit — supplier and wholesaler integrations, lab connectivity, support hours that overlap a UK working day.
Time to go live — days, weeks, or months before the first real consult runs through the system.
We are the team behind VaroVet, so read our #1 spot with that bias in mind — we have listed real cons against ourselves, and competitor prices reflect publicly listed information at time of writing. We are exhibiting at London Vet Show 2026, Stand W77 — come and argue with the ranking in person.

Proven on multi-country hospital groups
Cons
Multi-week implementation is typical
Premium per-user pricing plus setup fees
Feature density is overkill for a first-opinion practice

Design-led product with a strong mobile experience
Active user community
Cons
US-centred: US data residency and US support hours

Buyer's checklist
How to choose for a UK practice
The UK market is unusual: with roughly six in ten practices under corporate ownership by recent industry analyses, the vendors increasingly build and sell for group head offices. If you are an independent, your needs — cost control, data ownership, the freedom to leave — are not what most of the market is optimised for. Four questions to settle before you shortlist:
1. Are you buying as an independent or inside a group?
Group practices inherit group decisions — enterprise contracts, central reporting, long implementations — and systems like Provet Cloud and ezyVet are built for exactly that. Independents should optimise for the opposite: month-to-month terms, a price list you can read before anyone phones you, and no implementation project standing between signing up and seeing patients.
2. Where should your data live after Brexit?
UK GDPR substantially mirrors EU GDPR, so EU-hosted systems sit comfortably within UK data-protection expectations — in practice they are run to the stricter of the two regimes. US-hosted platforms can be made compliant, but the legal posture is weaker and support often runs on US hours. Wherever the servers are, the non-negotiable is ownership: your practice as data controller, the vendor as processor, and a full export available on demand.
3. Which UK supplier integrations do you actually use?
Wholesaler ordering and claims plumbing (VetEnvoy, NVS, MWI and the like) save real admin time if your practice runs on them — Lupa Pets has the strongest native catalogue here, and UK-established vendors generally beat newer EU entrants, VaroVet included. List the integrations you genuinely use weekly, then ask each vendor which are native, which are workarounds, and which are roadmap.
4. What does a seat really cost?
Do the maths per person, not per site. A three-vet practice with two receptionists is five billed users on per-user pricing, but only three on a model where non-clinical staff are free. Add SMS metering, add-ons, and any setup fee, convert everything into one monthly figure per currency, and compare that — not the headline. Our cost guide walks through the full calculation.
It splits along ownership lines. Practices inside corporate groups usually run whatever the group has standardised on, often a legacy or group-mandated system. Independents increasingly choose their own cloud PIMS — Provet Cloud and ezyVet are well established in the UK, Lupa Pets is the UK-built AI-first newcomer, IDEXX Neo serves IDEXX-diagnostics practices, and VaroVet is the EU-hosted option with published pricing. Legacy on-premise installs such as Cornerstone persist where switching has felt too painful.
How much does veterinary software cost in the UK?
Only a minority of vendors publish prices. Lupa Pets lists £100 per site per month plus £50 per user per month; VaroVet publishes €69/month Basic and €149/month Professional with three clinical users included and non-clinical staff free. Provet Cloud, ezyVet, Shepherd, and Cornerstone are quote-based. Whatever the headline, model the total: seats × per-user fee, plus SMS, add-ons, and any setup or implementation charges — total cost of ownership routinely lands 30–50% above the sticker price.
Which veterinary software is best for independent UK practices?
Independents feel per-seat pricing hardest, because reception and admin headcount is high relative to vet headcount. That makes the two published-price options the natural shortlist: VaroVet (non-clinical staff free and unlimited, from €69/month) and Lupa Pets (£100/site plus £50 for every user). From there it comes down to whether UK supplier integrations and bundled AI matter more to you than cost per seat and data ownership.
Is EU-hosted software suitable for a UK practice after Brexit?
In practice, yes. UK GDPR substantially mirrors EU GDPR, and EU-hosted systems operate under the stricter of the two regimes by default. What matters is the processor agreement: confirm where the data sits, that the vendor acts as processor with your practice as controller, and that you can export everything on demand. Those questions apply equally to US-hosted vendors — where the answers are usually weaker.
Can I switch veterinary software without losing patient history?
Yes. Every mainstream PIMS exports clients, patients, clinical history, vaccinations, and stock. The real work is validating the import: ask the new vendor to migrate a sample of your real data first, run both systems in parallel over the cutover, and reconcile financial reports before you switch off the old one. VaroVet includes migration free on annual Professional and Enterprise plans.
14-day free trial, no card, no contract. Every price published, non-clinical staff free, and migration handled for you on annual plans. Or come and see it at London Vet Show 2026, Stand W77.
